In the late 80s and early 90s Vegas tried to transform itself into a family town. Their goal seemed to be to appeal to everyone.
The movie industry seems to be doing the same thing. Looking at movie times today, I realized that most movies were sort of in this narrow safe “four quadrant“ range.
The success of animation starting in the 90s probably had a push on that. Animation used to be an occasional thing. But now it seems like it’s 50% of the releases.
I think there’s a reasonable chicken and egg question here. The industry had some huge successes with huge budgets and taught itself that that is the way to go. But many industries have a steady base of income through whatever service or product plus another thing or two that make them larger amounts of money. They seem to have given up on the steady base.
